The new Star Wars films have been divisive to say the least. The Force Awakens was widely accepted with a cultural sigh of relief, The Last Jedi was either the best installment in the franchise or its doom depending on who's talking, and Rise of Skywalker was...well it tried. But one thing many fans picked up on was that Rise of Skywalker, directed by J.J. Abrams, seemed to be doing its level best to undo the creative choices Rian Johnson had made in Last Jedi.

This came as a surprise to some fans as J.J. had done nothing but praise The Last Jedi and Rian Johnson in the media, often stating that he'd been given a great platform to launch the final installment of the series from. But his movie negated the plot point that Rey was not a legacy character, either demoted or completely left out key original characters Johnson had created, and abandoned Johnson's creative through-line to stick to a safe and more formulaic Star Wars movie.

Abrams has offered no explanation as to why his movie tried to reset the status quo, to seemingly nobody's enjoyment, but it is clear that his intention was very much to pretend that as little of The Last Jedi as possible mattered to the grander continuity of the franchise.
