3. Eastbound And Down

Formerly disgraced baseball player Kenny Powers completed his journey back to the top of his game in the fourth and final season of Eastbound and Down last year, and our man McConaughey helped him get there. First appearing as "Texas Scout" and later as the much more reasonable (but less literally) named Roy McDaniel, the actor got to show off some stronger comedic chops than usual, no doubt helped by getting to act opposite Danny McBride rather than Sarah Jessica Parker. In fact he was a perfect fit as he turned over some of the show's trademark profane turns of phrase in his smooth Texas tones. As the man who helped Kenny Powers out of exile in Mexico, back into American baseball and then up further into the big leagues, McDaniel was both a pivotal part of the story that built over four seasons and one of its highlights. From his first appearance, urging Powers to "suck his dream's cock" whilst he had the chance, to his scene-stealing monologue in the third season finale as he leads a locker room prayer reprising and riffing on that line in fantastically filthy fashion, McConaughey really grabbed ahold of this meaty role and just went to town on it.
