People have called it chilling, ambiguous and thought-provoking, but here's another word for the original Blair Witch Project's ending: unavoidable.

Filmmakers Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez shot the found-footage classic on a budget that makes Rocky's look like a dragon's horde, just $60,000, and that had completely dried up when it came to filming the final scene.

With no money left, the duo had to improvise and bring the curtain down with subtly, serving up a final scene in which one of the character is seen facing the wall while another drops the camera, presumably after being attacked. It's a call-back to the tale of a sadistic child murderer called Rustin Parr, mentioned earlier in the movie.

When test audiences were left baffled by this conclusion, the studio handed over more money so Myrick and Sanchez could shoot some alternative endings. One involves death by hanging and the other a crucifixion of sorts, neither of which is anywhere close to as scary as the fan theories about what the original ending really means.

While The Blair Witch directorial duo were praised for leaving things to the imagination, they didn't really have a choice on that.
