The Harry Potter series is no stranger to plot twists. Influenced by the titans of the whodunit genre, Rowling filled her stories with twists and turns, most of which are impossible to predict despite how many clues are left along the way.
Certain plot twists stand out more than others, though. The revelation that Scabbers is actually Peter Pettigrew, for instance, is a jaw-dropping moment during The Prisoner of Azkaban.
And the same can be said of the twist involving Mad-Eye Moody at the end of Harry’s fourth year. As fun as it is to experience these moments for the first time, they can sometimes overshadow some of the smaller plot twists throughout the series.
More often than not, such twists don’t have as much relevance to the core plot of their respective stories, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t effective.
Indeed, the Harry Potter franchise is full of great subplots and wonderful character arcs that are sometimes more enjoyable than the main storyline.
