The Harry Potter series is no stranger to plot twists. Influenced by the titans of the whodunit genre, Rowling filled her stories with twists and turns, most of which are impossible to predict despite how many clues are left along the way.

Certain plot twists stand out more than others, though. The revelation that Scabbers is actually Peter Pettigrew, for instance, is a jaw-dropping moment during The Prisoner of Azkaban.

And the same can be said of the twist involving Mad-Eye Moody at the end of Harry’s fourth year. As fun as it is to experience these moments for the first time, they can sometimes overshadow some of the smaller plot twists throughout the series.

More often than not, such twists don’t have as much relevance to the core plot of their respective stories, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t effective.

Indeed, the Harry Potter franchise is full of great subplots and wonderful character arcs that are sometimes more enjoyable than the main storyline.

Though these more obscure plot twists are frequently discussed by Harry Potter fanatics, they are rarely given enough credit by the wider fanbase...

7. The Triwizard Cup Is A Portkey – The Goblet Of Fire

This plot twist is often overlooked because of the events that immediately follow it. And this is perfectly understandable, given the importance of Cedric’s death and the return of the Dark Lord.

Yet what’s clever about this particular plot twist is how well it links to the start of The Goblet of Fire. In order to get to and from the Quidditch World Cup, Harry, Hermione, and the Weasleys use a portkey in the shape of an old boot.

The introduction of this travelling method appears to be nothing more than an interesting bit of world-building, but in reality, it was establishing something that would be vital later on.

As such, when Harry and Cedric grab the Triwizard Cup, viewers and readers know what’s happening even if they weren’t able to anticipate the twist itself. It’s a clever link to the beginning of the story, and one that isn’t given enough credit.
