7 Great "Passing Of The Torch" Moments In Movies

4. Starsky & Hutch Pass Off The Keys To The Company Car

The 2004 movie remake of Starsky & Hutch (or, in Spanish, Starsky y Hutch) may not have been the most important cinematic experience of the decade, but it probably could have been a lot worse. Because at least its principal stars, Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson, cared enough about the original property to give a genuine reprisal of the titular roles. According to the original Starsky (Paul Michael Glaser) and Hutch (David Soul), they each got several phone calls from Ben and Owen asking for advice on how to play them. Evidently, Stiller was a huge fan of the show and wanted to nail the tone of the 70s version. And a lot of that had to do with utilising the classic "tomato" Torino, the car that became as much of a character in the show as either of the humans. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0LSpR1Ob_A The "handing over of the keys" moment between Glaser and Stiller was cheesy, sure, but it was also a very simple, very sweet gesture between the actors. Of course, plot-wise it was pretty unnecessary, but what do you expect from the guy who directed Zoolander?
