1. Kevin Smith's Cinematic Catalogue
If you have watched, listened to or read any of this man's work, then you will know why he gets the top spot. There is little doubt of the impact that this one series of film has had on Smith's creative genius. In fact, Star Wars runs through the veins of his entire catalogue of films. The following list of references is not comprehensive, but it should give you an idea of the scale of what I am talking about: In Chasing Amy, Hooper X, Holden and Banky have an argument about Lando Calrissian's role as a "strong black role model" in sci-fi and fantasy, which ends in a Hooper X rant about Vader's unmasking being a racist statement against black people. Later Silent Bob says to Holden, "Do or do not. There is no try." In Clerks there is a long debate between Dante and Randal about all the innocent workers and technicians who died when the Death Star II blew up. In Clerks II, there is a Lord of the Rings vs. Star Wars debate. In Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Mark Hamill plays the C***knocker, while the title is obviously a reference to The Empire Strikes Back. In one scene, at the end, Hamill and Smith are fighting with light-sabers In the duel, Bob (Smith) uses the Force to retrieve his light-saber, while Jay's saber is double-bladed. The duel between Jay and Hamill ends with Jay cutting Hamill's hand off. After screaming in pain, Hamill looks directly at the camera and says "not again", referencing Empire. There are clearly hundreds more Star Wars in-jokes, parodies and other material dedicated to the Saga. Let me know your own favourites in the comments below...
