Daniel Kaluuya's best-known role is undoubtedly that of Chris Washington in Get Out. However, despite the British actor's award-winning performance in one of the most critically-acclaimed horror films of the past decade, he is not a fan of the genre for the most part.

When Kaluuya was auditioning for Get Out, Jordan Peele presented him with a list of horror films to watch for research purposes. Although he was subsequently given the lead role, Kaluuya refused to watch any of the director's recommendations because horror films are not generally grounded enough for his taste. According to the actor, they do not allow for his complete immersion in a story because they constantly remind him that he is watching a piece of fiction.

Get Out is not shy about its influences, with nods to films like The Stepford Wives, Scream and The Shining evident throughout. Yet, it is also easy to see why a non-horror fan like Kaluuya was able to embrace the script, which relies heavily on factors like human relationships and creating a recognisable sense of time and place.
