Whilst it’s tempting to knight the brave old birds themselves as the heroes of Bird Box, it’s Rick, one of the only humans left who isn't trying to kill you, who deserves that honour for guiding our protagonists through this monster-infested world.

In a world where the power of sight is turned against you and remaining humans are out for themselves, it's comforting to have someone like Rick watching over you. Having seen her fellow survivors picked off one by one by an unseen nightmare monster, Malorie has been left alone, lost and determined to protect her dead friend's two children through the hellscape they now live in.

Guiding Malorie through a walkie talkie she had been using to communicate with the other survivors without the use of eyesight, he offers to help lead her through the now barren and danger fielded world with the promise of a community of survivors hidden within the forest. With only one small mistake or suspicious character needed to lead to your downfall, it’s hard to trust a character that goes unseen throughout the majority of the movie.

Fortunately, Rick proves to be a man of his word, and helps Malorie eventually brave the environment around her and arrive at the community.

Rick proves that trust and hope can still be found in this frighteningly world and provides us hopeful that there can be a future for those who have found themselves within his capable hands.
