7 Horror Movies Where Supporting Characters Save The Day

7. Hallorann (The Shining)

hellraiser 2 tiffany movie
Warner Bros.

In Stanley Kubrick's 'The Shining', Dick Hallorann is the mentor figure who guides Danny through his experiences in the cursed ‘Overlook Hotel’, whilst his mother Wendy and father Jack are preoccupied with spirits intent on making the family's stay a living hell.

We discover that Danny has these psychic abilities that nobody else can explain, other than Hallorann himself, who shares the same powers and is able to teach Danny more about how to manage ‘The Shining’.

After Hallorann shows Danny the ability to telepathically communicate during their first encounter, he is able to link with Danny through The Shining, which comes in particularly handy after Hallorann senses he and Wendy are being terrorised by the possessed axe-wielding Jack.

Bringing a snowcat to investigate the incident, he makes it to the scene just in time to face off against Jack, ultimately dying in the encounter.

It's unfortunate that Hallorann is killed off so quickly when coming to the family's aid as he gets a minimal amount of screen time to teach the audience more about the potential of the Shining itself. However, without having taught Danny to reach out through his abilities when in danger, it's likely that nobody would've known to check on the Torrance family.

Without providing them with transport to escape, Danny may have gone on to be just the latest child fatality of the Overlook.
