7 Insanely Dedicated Acting Performances That Were Totally Ignored

1. Joaquin Phoenix - I'm Still Here

Thought Nicolas Cage was crazy?... You're right, but even he can't match the sheer insanity of Joaquin Phoenix. Read on to see why he made the number one spot on this list and while you're at it, just look at that beard. Back in 2008, Phoenix surprised the movie world by abruptly announcing his early retirement, claiming that he now wanted to become a successful hip-hop star. Many wondered whether this was a hoax, but after his bizarre appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman, fans begin to worry that Phoenix may have had genuine drug problems. Meanwhile, actor friend Casey Affleck began to film a documentary about Phoenix's transition to rap, calling the film I'm Still Here. Looking back, it's hard to believe that so many people fell for this stunt, but the film makers only revealed that the events of the movie were staged after its release. Also, who would have thought a successful and acclaimed actor like Phoenix would genuinely stay in character like that for two whole years? It's just nuts. Despite the insanity, I'm Still Here failed to make an impact on audiences and critics alike. By the time the movie was released, fans were fed up of Phoenix the rap star and just wanted regular Phoenix back on the screen where he belonged. What's even more bizarre is how quickly everyone seems to have forgotten about this weird episode, heaping praise on Phoenix for recent roles in The Master and Her.
