Ultimately, he didn't return to play Bruce Banner when it came to The Avengers - though he insists the friction between him and Marvel was overblown by people looking for a sensational story. The honour at that point went to Mark Ruffalo, who continued to play the Hulk into the Avengers sequels and Thor: Ragnarok.
