7 Most Overlooked Final Girls In Horror Movies

2. Anna Assaoui (Morjana Alaoui) - Martyrs

Sarah Polley Dawn Of The Dead
Wild Bunch

To describe what Anna (Morjana Alaoui) endured at the hands of her captors in 2008's Martyrs as abuse isn't enough. To describe it as torture isn't enough, and to describe it as a living nightmare isn't. Words fail. If you've yet to see this blisteringly nihilistic product of New French Extremity, then try to envision Hellraiser without what little hope and humour it had.

Similarly to Hellraiser's Cenobites, Anna's torturers are very much concerned with pain; specifically, the point at which the truth of the afterlife reveals itself as a result of its infliction.

In the effort to turn her into one of the titular martyrs, Anna is systematically brutalised physically (and thus mentally) in order to built up her tolerance of agony. At the end of this campaign of torment, Anna is flayed alive, at which point she reaches a state of transcendence. The nature of the afterlife learned, she whispers her knowledge to the woman known only as Mademoiselle, the apparent leader of her captors...

Whilst Anna mostly endures her ordeal passively, she endures it nonetheless. Though left catatonic, her unyielding nature puts her contemporaries to shame.
