7 Most Overlooked Final Girls In Horror Movies
1. Erin (Sharni Vinson) - You're Next
Like so many horrifying experiences, 2011's You're Next revolves around the protagonist meeting her partner's parents for the first time.
Oz-girl Erin is taken to her boyfriend Felix's parents' country home for their wedding anniversary, where the couple are joined by the aforementioned parents, as well as Felix's two brothers and sister, and their significant others.
Trouble begins during the evening meal. Uncomfortable bickering amongst Felix and his brother Drake is interrupted with a crossbow bolt through their sister's BF's forehead, and it goes downhill from there. The group have been targetted by three people wearing animal masks that are somehow both innocent-looking and menacing at the same time, all for no apparent reason. Thus ensues a night of relentless horror as the party is picked off one by one.
But this is a situation in which Erin shines. Gradually, the audience starts to pick up on Erin's behaviour; she's the one who tries to calm everyone down, who proposes practical, safety-oriented responses with authority, yet without arrogance.
Her more subtle actions then become full blown offensive tactics. She rigs a few clever booby traps here and there in scenes reminiscent of Home Alone, and even - correctly - surmises that more than three people are part of this bloody conspiracy. She even throws herself into hand-to-hand combat with no questions asked.
It turns out that Erin was brought up in a survivalist cult in the Australian Outback. As soon as the attack begins, it's like a flip has been switched in her mind; less fight mode, more I-will-not-stop-until-I-f**k-up-your-s**t mode.
Naturally, Erin suffers a fair bit of punishment herself; she's effectively alone in going up against five other individuals, most of whom have her at a physical advantage. But Erin out-plays them.
If there's anyone you want to be stuck in with in the fight against a zombie outbreak, subterranean mutants, or just a plain old slasher killer, it's her.
