7. Willem Dafoe - Norman Osborn - Spider-Man

At the time of Spider-Man's release, this otherwise excellent actor felt like a perfect fit for the role of Norman Osborn, a once good scientist turned sinister by an experiment gone wrong - one which condemns him to a double life as The Green Goblin, a supervillain who flies around causing havoc in a costume that would look quite at home in an episode of Power Rangers.

Willem Dafoe has always been an actor known for his scenery-chewing approach to the art of acting, but here well, it's something else. Dafoe doesn't just play over-the-top villain here - he's operating on another level entirely, tearing the place apart and leaving nothing in his wake. To say it's a distracting performance in retrospect warrants a prize in this year's Understatement Awards: it's insane and camp and hammy in equal measure - an endless carousel of more, more, more!

Maybe you watched this as a kid and liked what Dafoe was doing, but witnessing his turn as Spider-Man's arch-nemesis now, in 2016 well, it's safe to say that the performance doesn't play anywhere near as well as I remember it. Mostly I gasped whenever Dafoe was on screen, wondering whether the actor had managed to take scenery-chewing to its absolute zenith.
