The 2018 Success: Venom

Venom was Sony's chance to prove that they could do the whole superhero thing on their own, without the help of Kevin Feige and the MCU. And while the movie isn't perfect, it's performing exceptionally well financially, and Sony will undoubtedly be pleased with the results - despite an atrocious critical reception.

With over $700 million worldwide - and counting - Venom 2 is absolutely going to happen (Tom Hardy is already signed on for more), but now that Sony has a solid foundation to work with, you can be sure that they're going to try and build off it in any way they can, producing many more superhero flicks in an attempt to reach the same dizzying heights as the MCU.

We already know that a Jared Leto-starring Morbius movie is in the works, and it's safe to assume Sony are pouring their all into that project, given how well Venom did. But this is just the start for the SUMC - Sony's Universe of Marvel Characters, as it's been dubbed - and you can expect a lot more to come over the next few years.

In August (a month before Venom opened) Variety reported that the studio was looking into movies based on Silk, Jackpot, and Nightwatch, with a Kraven the Hunter movie being written by The Equalizer 2's Richard Wenk. Now that Sony knows they can generate a smash-hit, these projects are a lot more likely to come together.

Here's another cinematic universe to add to the pile...

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
