The 2018 Success: The Meg

Shark movies aren't especially common these days, and mega-budget shark movies with competent creature CGI are practically nonexistent. This gave The Meg a certain allure, drawing in audiences with those sharp, giant teeth, an effect it capitalised on by delivering over half a billion dollars in box-office grosses.

To put that in perspective, Solo - you know, that movie about one of the most beloved characters in cinematic history - couldn't even crack $400 million. The Meg was a monster hit, and with one of the producers on the first movie recently telling Deadline that a sequel is being talked about, it seems like it's a matter of if, not when.

But how would The Meg 2 even work? It didn't exactly end well for the shark the first time around. Well, Steve Alten - the author of the novel on which the movie is loosely based - has written a handful of Meg books (with more on the way), so there's plenty of material for the filmmakers to mine.

And with hundreds of millions of dollars to be made, expect them to mine away.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for over ten years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. In 2022, he took charge of WhoCulture and has grown it into the biggest Doctor Who channel on YouTube, and one of the biggest Doctor Who communities on the web full-stop. He has been writing and video editing since his early teens, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers, off the back of a burning obsession with the Matt Smith era of the show. Like many his age, he first got into Doctor Who with the 2005 revival, but has since gone back and fallen in love with the classic years too. If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order, or to give you a random factoid about the making of Gridlock, Danny is the person to ask!
