2. My Best Friend's Wedding (1997)
PJ Logan's 1997 movie My Best Friend's Wedding continues to be one of the best-loved of all wedding movies. The unpredictability of this romantic comedy is one of the film's strengths. Read the premise of My Best Friend's Wedding and you would be forgiven for thinking it had a foregone conclusion: Julianne (Julia Roberts) realises she's in love with her best friend Michael (Delmot Mulroney) mere days before he is due to marry someone else: bubbly college student Kimmy (Cameron Diaz). Determined not to lose Michael, headstrong Julianne begins elaborately scheming, aiming to win back Michael and stop the wedding that she believes will ruin all chances of her future happiness. This enjoyable movie eschews many typical romantic comedy conventions and what happens along the way is not as predictable as cinema goers might expect. Arguably the film's true appeal lies in its well-drawn characters, its emphasis on friendship and its winning mix of laugh-out-loud comedy and heart-felt moments of pathos. As Julianne's other good friend, George, Rupert Everett steals every single scene he is in. Roped into pretending to be Julianne's fiancée despite the fact he is gay, George has a hilarious scene in which he meets the fellow wedding guests and somehow starts a restaurant-wide rendition of 'I Say a Little Prayer for You.' In another musical highlight Cameron Diaz's karaoke rendition of 'I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself' is one of the movie's best-remembered scenes. The movie sparked a career rejuvenation for Julia Roberts, who is brilliant as Julianne: her multi-faceted performance renders the sometimes-unlikable protagonist nearly always sympathetic, whilst her scenes with both Mulroney and Everett are very touching. Ultimately, the movie is a must-see for all, even those who normally steer well clear of romantic comedies. It is a hilarious, well-acted, touching and incredibly fun wedding movie.
