1. Four Weddings And A Funeral (1994)
1994's Four Weddings and a Funeral may have been released nearly twenty years ago but it remains one of the best-loved, best-respected and most successful romantic comedies of all time. The movie established writer-director Richard Curtis' reputation as Britain's foremost producer of romantic-comedies, made a star of its lead actor Hugh Grant and was lauded with awards and praise. The movie's longevity, much-loved characters and universal appeal land it the top spot on our wedding movie list. The film follows thirty-something bachelor Charles (Hugh Grant) and his eccentric group of London-based friends (including Kristen Scott Thomas, Simon Callow and John Hannah) all of whom find themselves regular attendees at weddings. Whilst attending the wedding of a mutual friend, Charles and glamourous American Carrie (Andie MacDowell) meet and find they have an instant connection, but she is already engaged to wealthy Scotsman Hamish (Corin Redgrave). Over the course of the film, Carrie and Charles attend four successive weddings, and a funeral. As a series of events unfurl, and he tries to win over Carrie, Charles finds his views on romance, friendship and marriage changed and challenged. The ensuing mix of comedy, romance and tragedy results in Four Weddings' enduring success. Hugh Grant's charming performance makes him an intensely likable and empathetic lead and his chemistry with Andie MacDowell renders their relationship realistic. Poignant turns by John Hannah and Kristen Scott Thomas elevate the movie even further, whilst comic actors Rowan Atkinson and Anna Chancellor steal every scene they are in. The rest of the ensemble cast are perfectly cast and Curtis's examination of the social interactions that occur at weddings is both hilarious and realistic. For those wishing to see a wedding movie which raised the bar for all other wedding movies, a superior romantic comedy and a realistic yet incredibly funny and big-hearted film, Four Weddings and a Funeral is absolutely a must-see wedding movie.
