1. The Time Machine

It's hard to know exactly where it all went wrong for this film, which despite its good intentions could never become the engaging film it hoped to be. While the idea of it being based on the classic H.G. Wells classic initially sounds exciting, it is soon clear that the story is quite dated, and genuinely lacking in thrills.

The film sees Guy Pearce take the lead role as Dr. Alexander Hartdegen, a man who makes the pursuit of building a time machine his life work after his wife is murdered. After initial success, Alexander returns to save his wife, only to see her die all the same. This idea proves to be the most interesting of the film, but the moment when the adventures move forward in time prove to be the film's undoing.

We are soon forced to endure a battle between future iterations of the human race, the Eloi and the Morlocks, with not a single exciting moment to be had. The theme of trying to save those that we lost is pushed into the background, replaced with long speeches from Jeremy Irons' head Morlock, who looks like a cross between a Twilight vampire and Palpatine.

The film's runtime may only be 96 minutes, but it feels a hell of a lot longer. Guy Pearce struggles to be the dynamic front man the film needs, lacking the energy or charisma required to bring this lame duck to life.
