This entry is a perfect example of a film that utilises time travel elements expertly while never explaining its implications until its final moments. The original 1968 classic perfectly sets up its time travelling journey, letting the audience know that the human space travellers have moved forward in time without hinting why this is so significant.

Charlton Heston is phenomenal as George Taylor, the man who stands up to those "damn filthy apes." The manner in which the humans are treated are awfully similar to the manner in which we treat various species, the film's allegoric nature even more relevant today.

The battle sequences are excellently staged, but it is the script's ability to slowly unravel the mystery while keeping the big reveal hidden that makes this film work so well. The final reveal is of course what the film is most iconic for, and rivals The Sixth Sense in terms of the most impactful and insightful twist endings in cinema history.

The fact that the astronauts have been on Earth all along is a great twist, but what it says about human existence and human nature is truly groundbreaking. The fact that three near perfect prequels were able to be derived from this gem places this film in even higher esteem. Thankfully a re-watch shows that the film has held up to its deserved lofty place in pop culture, a truly timeless film treasure.
