Yes, it may have ripped off Groundhog's Day time looping presence, but when it is executed this well, does it really matter? A tragically underrated and poorly advertised product that barely made a profit, Edge Of Tomorrow, or Live, Die, Repeat as it was renamed in certain markets, fuses the best action and time-travel tropes into a perfect film.

Just like Groundhog Day, the film concentrates on the ability for a character to grow due to being stuck repeating the same day. Credit must got to Tom Cruise who once again displays why he is a great action hero. Cruise plays Major William Cage, a wimpish advertising guru who is literally forced on to the battlefield where he is killed. However, having killed an alien with time travelling ability, he wakes up exactly a day earlier.

The roles of 'alpha male' is handed to the Female lead here in Emily Blunt, whose dour demeanour and 'ripped' physicality as Rita, 'the angel of Verdon', makes her a truly intimidating presence. Blunt brilliantly emphasises her character's weakness, her abrasive manner and bruised psyche keeping potential help at bay.

The film shows Cage gradually progressing as a character to match and then even surpass that of Rita as a true leader, with his ability to display and relate to his emotions eventually making him the 'better person'. It's a great reversal of gender roles, and one can only hope the rumoured sequel occurs, as the Cruise/Blunt combo is one we need to see again.
