7 Perfect Time Travel Movies (And 7 That Sucked)
2. Terminator 2: Judgement Day
It is a rarity to have a sequel that surpasses the original, especially when the original is so damn near perfect as The Terminator. The original classic was such an effective film because of the ability to make the titular Terminator look so damn indestructible, the early 80's seemingly too early a time frame to handle such an ominous threat.
Terminator 2: Judgement Day manages to improve on the original, its delightful switch of Arnie's Terminator going from bad to good adding extra tension and gravitas to proceedings. Linda Hamilton's look of terror as Sarah Connor encounters Arnie's Terminator once more sends a chill up the spine of the audience, even though we know he is a good guy.
Robert Patrick delivers a delightfully dark performance as the advanced T-1000, a Terminator so advanced that it simply reboots to factory settings anytime it comes under fire. This premise has been done to death in future sequels, but its use here was innovative and added real stakes.
While the special effects were innovative and groundbreaking for the time, it is only when looking back retrospectively that we can truly appreciate how damn good they truly were. Seeing the T-1000 walk through the bars of the jail cell let us truly buy in to the idea that this being was from a more advanced time, and posed as big a threat as the last Terminator.
The ramifications of what the future may hold leads to that heartbreaking ending, Arnie making the 'human' decision to place others safety ahead of itself, and cementing it as the greatest sequel of all time.
