7 Reasons Batman V Superman Should Still Leave You Optimistic For The DC Universe
4. The Casting Is Exquisite
The collective tantrum that the internet exploded into regarding Ben Affleck never made a lick of sense. Given the source material that Snyder and DC were looking to work with, and given his evolution as an actor who has been both loved and hated, Affleck was basically born to play this role. The successful casting of Affleck is reflective of the wider success that Batman V Superman has had in picking good actors for the major roles.
Of course, though, you can't mention casting without giving special kudos to the inspired choice of Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. Gadot was exceptional and brought a legitimate strength and charisma to a character that has too often been a punchline amongst an often misogynistic fan base. It is not controversial at all to suggest that her brief spell in the movie was easily one of the highlights and that anticipation for her solo film has exploded exponentially since she exploded onto the screen.
Bit players were also successfully roped into the universe. Jeremy Irons and provided a fresh and beautifully constructed take on Alfred that was more in line with the version of the character who was a SIS badass, as opposed to a genteel servant of the aristocracy. And Holly Hunter was brilliant as always even though she had to share screen time with a manic Jesse Eisenberg and a jar of urine.
Even the more divisive casting choices such as Jesse Eisenberg and Henry Cavill are not bad selections inherently. The problems audiences have with them is less to do with the actors and their appropriateness for the role, than their performances in said roles. While I don't disagree entirely with some of the criticisms (particularly toward Eisenberg) the performers themselves were not the problem whatsoever.
