The cast of Watchmen is stacked with impressive character actors bringing their respective roles to life in as realistic a way as possible. Billy Crudups Dr. Manhattan oozes the aloof indifference of a man who finds that he is simply too big for this world, Patrick Wilson is believably haggard and worn out as Nite Owl, a hero past his prime too soon, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan manages to make The Comedian both terrifyingly uncaring and genuinely sympathetic. The standout though is Jackie Earle Haley as the masked Rorschach, whos cynical views punctuate the film to form its dark, beating heart. All four are perfectly cast and bring the exact qualities needed to their parts, giving enough of a personal twist to surprise anyone who has lived with the characters for years before stepping into the cinema. The only place the cast really falls down is that Malin Akermans Silk Spectre is too much of a blank slate, a character for Dr. Manhattan and then Nite Owl to bounce off without really having her own journey. Similarly Matthew Goodes Ozymandias also lacks the traditionally heroic physicality of his inspiration. Playing on his intellect over his brute strength works in theory, but Ozymandias is supposed to be an adonis, and Goode always looks too uncomfortable in the role to sell the character.
