7 Reasons Why Watchmen Is The Best DC Film So Far

5. It€™s A Labour Of Love, And It Shows

Zack Snyder has often talked of his love of Alan Moore€™s Watchmen and looking back that love and reverence seeps out of the screen during each second of the film€™s impressive run time. Snyder was and is a highly visual director above all else, just look at 300 and Sucker Punch, so a singular story with such a strong aesthetic as Watchmen really gives him a chance to shine by letting him put the comic onto the big screen wholesale. There have been plenty of adaptations of big story arcs in the past, but Snyder€™s love for Watchmen made him go one step further to the point where he transferred the book to the screen scene by scene. It must have been painstaking to set up, but for any fan of the book it€™s thrilling. No film before or since has felt quite as much like watching a comic come to life as Watchmen does. Some subplots and asides had to be cut to accommodate the runtime, but Snyder didn€™t just leave them on the cutting room floor. Instead he bundled them into extras such as the Tales of the Black Freighter DVD and even created an ultimate cut with the whole story in its rightful place. The love that Snyder shows for Moore€™s work is palpable, and even if Moore doesn€™t appreciate it, other Watchman fans really should.
