7 Recently Confirmed Truths You Didn’t Know About Famous Movies
1. RoboCop Was A Jesus Metaphor
There are so many subtexts at work in Paul Verhoeven's sci-fi masterpiece RoboCop.
It's a modern spin on the knight in shining armour archetype and an essay on the undying nature of the human soul, among other things, but what most people never realised is that it's also a Christ allegory.
The Dutch filmmaker only confirmed this in recent years, highlighting the hero's resurrection as the common thread running through his and Jesus's story. He elaborated on the matter in a recent interview with The Playlist...
"He gets killed in an even more brutal way, because I felt that was a metaphor of crucifixion. Murphy gets killed and resurrects. He is dead and resurrected with another brain.
"It is very interesting if you read in the Gospels about Jesus being resurrected. He doesn’t say anything anymore. It is monosyllabic. But he, after resurrection, expresses himself monosyllabic with phrases of five or ten words. If you look at RoboCop, that’s what he does."
Watching RoboCop with with the religious angle in mind makes it a radically different experience, but it's not as surreal as attending church and trying to figure out how the priest's sermon links up with the events of Verhoeven's 1987 classic.
