7 Star Wars Fan Theories We Wish Were True

3. Mace Windu SURVIVED Revenge Of The Sith

Okay, so, controversially, I'm not currently on the "Mace Windu Should Return" train. I love the fact Samuel L. Jackson is in Star Wars and Windu as a character clearly has loads of untapped potential we're yet to see, but unlike other fans I didn't really understand the hype behind the idea he could return in The Mandalorian (which he obviously didn't).

That said, this theory has so much support behind it that it would be remiss to not include here, and especially so given Jackson himself has weighed in on the matter on separate occasions. The Revenge of the Sith actor has previously stated his own desire to reprise the role post-Episode III, and has even gone so far as to say that George Lucas believes that Windu really did survive his encounter with Darth Sidious.

Now, I know better than to pick a fight with George Lucas - especially because he's lovely and I hope he's enjoying a well earned retirement where all the Jar Jar haters can't reach him - and to be fair it's easy to see the potential a fugitive Windu series could have.

In the prequels, the character essentially served the purpose of typifying the arrogance of the Jedi Council, and there's a lot to be said about how his treatment of Anakin may have contributed to his fall to the dark side. All the Jedi were guilty of not being able to save Skywalker, a cross Obi-Wan and Yoda had to bear on Tatooine and Dagobah respectively. But Windu? He may have had the foresight to see Anakin's darkness, but at the same time, that lack of trust may have ostracised Obi-Wan's apprentice from his peers, and pushed him further into the arms of Palpatine. Seeing him navigate that as he weighs up his next steps could make for an interesting mini-series or novel.

At the very least, no one can deny just how cool old Mace would look on screen, such as in the image above made by Spdrmnkyxxiii on Instagram.

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
