7 Star Wars Fan Theories We Wish Were True

4. Finn Becomes An Actual Jedi After Episode IX

Whatever your thoughts on the Sequel Trilogy, I think most of us would agree that Lucasfilm did John Boyega dirty.

He was sold as being the main hero of The Force Awakens but found himself subject to a bait and switch ending where it was revealed that Rey, not Finn, would be the one to carry on the legacy of the Jedi. That's nothing to slight Rey either, who also found herself the subject of some wacky creative choices in Episode IX, but rather that Boyega's character never got the chance to truly shine across any of the three films.

Now, if we are to take Chris Terrio and JJ Abrams' word on The Rise of Skywalker's script and that "I need to tell you something" moment that led to... nothing... between Finn and Rey, the real meaning of that scene was that Finn was going to reveal he was Force sensitive. Yes it makes no sense at that point in the film and it's obvious they were hinting at a more romantic angle, but whatever, Finn does show a connection to the Force in Episode IX's finale and it should be the first step for Lucasfilm to make amends for the missteps taken with the character.

So far the only piece of Star Wars media to peer into the post-Episode IX future has been the Lego Star Wars Holiday Special, and while that is obviously not canon, it does show Rey attempting to teach Finn the ways of the Jedi, with the former stormtrooper even wielding her lightsaber for a time.

Demand for Star Wars content set after The Rise of Skywalker probably isn't all that high currently, but surely Jedi Finn should be first on the priority for when Lucasfilm eventually do look further into that era. Fans have already mocked up some great designs of what Finn as a Jedi would look like (ApexForm's stunning render pictured above just one of them), and it would feel like a major missed opportunity not to depict him as such in the current Star Wars canon.

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
