7 Star Wars Fan Theories We Wish Were True

1. Luke Skywalker's Lightsaber Is Powered By Qui-Gon's Crystal

Of all the Star Wars fan theories to have emerged over the last few years, there are a few that pack quite as emotional a punch as this one.

While the creation of Luke Skywalker's lightsaber was covered in depth in Legends, which revealed how Luke used a synthetic crystal to power his weapon, its origins are a little less clear in the new canon. All we know for certain is that he modelled the design on Obi-Wan's lightsaber and built it using parts he found in his old master's home. The provenance of the green kyber crystal housed within the blade is still unknown.

There's a good chance that the full details of how Luke built his first lightsaber will be revealed in Charles Soule's ongoing Star Wars comic, which is set in between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, but that doesn't mean we can't have fun theorising in the meantime. It could be that Luke ventured to Ilum or another planet where kyber grew naturally to find his crystal, but if we're really leaning into the idea he found everything he needed to complete the blade in Obi-Wan's hut, wouldn't it make much more sense for it to be Qui-Gon's crystal instead, given we know he brought Jinn's lightsaber with him to Tatooine?

Think about it. I mean, really think about it. Despite only appearing in the one film, Qui-Gon is one of the most pivotal characters in the Skywalker Saga, responsible for teaching Kenobi and bringing Anakin to the Jedi Temple. He always believed in the Chosen One prophecy, and to see his legacy live on in the weapon of the Jedi who would one day redeem Anakin would be incredibly fitting.

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
