7 Stupid Retcons That Ruined Famous Movie Franchises

2. The Egg On The Sulaco - Alien 3

There was never supposed to be an egg on board the Sulaco. You know it. I know it. Heck, the people who wrote the script for the movie know it. As a result of this little embellishment, though, the incredibly conflicted Aliens sequel, Alien 3, opens with one of the worst retcons ever committed to celluloid. Having survived the horrific events of Aliens, Ripley, Newt and Hicks board their escape vessel and enter cryosleep - hoping that one day, hey, they'll be picked up by another craft, perhaps? The story should've ended there. But wait - there was actually an egg on the Sulaco all along, apparently, which the Queen, uh, somehow managed to lay before it took off? Worst still, this retcon was included purely for the purposes of killing off Newt and Hicks, who are horribly murdered by a face-hugger whilst they're sleeping. Fans of the franchise derided the decision to just bump off two beloved characters for no real reason, of course, because who wouldn't deride that? It was at this point that the Alien franchise took a nosedive; when the filmmakers decided to start messing with the continuity, compromising everything that came before. Tragic.
