7 Tantalising Ways Anne Hathaway Made Her Catwoman Awesome

6. The Name Also Goes Back To The Character's Origins

Given the self-professed gritty realism of the whole trilogy, most of the Batman rogues who appear come along with a slight reimagining to make them fit within the world. Compare Tom Hardy's Bane to the version that broke the bat in the comics to see just how far this goes. It even filters through to little touches, like the genesis of the names; Two Face is a mean nickname for Harvey Dent, while Scarecrow becomes more complicated than just an alter ego. So it's to be expected that Catwoman would undergo a similar treatment - it is a little corny for such a smooth character to go around with that name. But rather than contriving an in-world reason for her to take up the monkier, Nolan simply had her always known by her real name, Selina Kyle. In the pre-release hype this lead some fans to question whether Hathaway would actually don the leather outfit, but ultimately it helped her better integrate into a world. The film isn't devoid of references to the alter ego title though. The name the papers have dubbed Kyle following her burglaries is The Cat. Not only an overt nod to the popular name, it actually hearken's back to the character's origins; when she was first introduced, she went by that shortened title.
