7 Tantalising Ways Anne Hathaway Made Her Catwoman Awesome

1. Christopher Nolan Wasn't Going To Include Her At All (Which Made Her All The Better)

Following the success of The Dark Knight, fans were on the hunt for hints as to which villains the mooted third film in the series could bring to life. They eventually landed on a little quip from Lucius regarding Bruce Wayne's new armour's suitability for dealing with dogs ("Should do fine against cats."), setting set off many thinking that Nolan was laying groundwork for the introduction of Catwoman. And they'd have been wrong. Nolan is notorious for only keeping one project on the go at once; he never announced his plans for a new Batman before finishing the film that came before. Even the overt Joker tease at the end of Batman Begins was more a fan wink than a genuine hint. But it was a different story with Catwoman; even after he and David S. Goyer had started work on the story for Rises Selina Kyle didn't appear. It was only when Jonathan Nolan, Chris' brother and the film's co-screenwriter, insisted the character was too big a part of the Batman mythos to not be included that she became a part of the story. We all know how the late in development addition of a character can really scupper a film (look no further than Sony's insistence that Venom be in Spider-Man 3), but Nolan and Goyer took up the challenge, to massive success. That you don't notice this in the finished product says a lot about the duo's strength at storytelling; it had the very subtle effect of making Selina Kyle feel more a part of the world, instead of a simple narrative toy.
