7 Tantalising Ways Anne Hathaway Made Her Catwoman Awesome

2. Jen Teases At Her Backstory

In a film brimming with secondary characters it's to be expected to see some fall by the wayside as the finale races closer. The biggest casualty in The Dark Knight Rises was Juno Temple's Jen, a thief who lives with Selina and seemingly shares a similar life view. She appears periodically during the first act, but by the time war starts she's MIA. However, given the comic significance of the character we can actually glean a lot about her character from her handful of appearances. Introduced in Batman: Year One (the comic which proved a key inspiration to Batman Begins), Holly Robinson was a young prostitute who lives with Catwoman and at conception is identical to Jen in all but name (she'd subsequently suffer a comic book death, resurrection and for a period take up the Catwoman mantle). The similarities between the two characters hints that the backstory of Selina Kyle in The Dark Knight Rises is similar that shown in Year One and its expansions; in the comics Kyle is a former prostitute. It's all speculative, but is very likely the idea Nolan and Hathaway worked with. A couple of deleted scenes from the script suggest an attempt to put this character element on screen, with Selina trying to help Jen out of prostitution. Probably cut for time, it's cool to see little remnants of the backstory remain for fans to find.
