7 Things James Gunn Has To Fix In Suicide Squad 2
1. Keep Margot Robbie
Gunn is rumoured to have been given control of everything on his Suicide Squad movie, including recasting. But the Aussie was the breakout star of the first film. Ditching her would be a mistake.
You could not get moved on Halloween in 2016 without seeing Harley Quinn. Whether it was a cosplay perfect rendition of Robbie’s get-up, a rag tag combination of blue shorts and a red jacket, or contrarians dressed as the animated Harley to prove a point. While die hards may not like it, Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn gave Suicide Squad something that more critically acclaimed movies lacked: pop culture relevance.
While some parts of her character design suffered from the same, over-labelled flaws as the Joker, this is the Harley the public knows now. And it’s hard to see how a vinyl jester’s hat would fit the narrative of deadly criminals. Actors who played less memorable stars may be rightly worried about Gunn’s creative control, but Robbie need not be one of these.
Her lip smacking, bat swinging, Brooklyn accented Harley might not have been everyone’s ideal version, but she won’t care. She’s a bad guy. It’s what she does.
