From one Zack Snyder film to another now, and given that Watchmen is basically just a panel-for-panel recreation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' graphic novel, it was always going to be the case that there would be scenes only those who read the comic would clock.

Surprisingly, the one scene from Watchmen that flew underneath everyone's radar wasn't even in the comic to begin with. Instead, it's one set during the opening credits, and features a nod to yet another momentous event in the DC canon.

In the sequence, the original Nite Owl, Hollis Mason, can be seen stopping a mugging outside of the Gotham Opera House. To his left, a wealthy couple look on in relative distress, with the woman wearing a prominent set of pearls around her neck. Sound familiar? It should do - because the pair are none other than Thomas and Martha Wayne.

To the right of Mason are covers for Batman #1, released in 1940. The Dark Knight did of course make his debut in Detective Comics #27, but still, the reference is pretty noticeable. The first Nite Owl stops the murder of Bruce Wayne's parents - there you have it.
