7 Underrated Movies From MCU Directors

2. James Gunn - Slither

Hunt For The Wilderpeople
Universal Pictures

James Gunn is the wacky director behind the surprise smash hits Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.1 and 2. Gunn brought lesser known characters such as Groot, Star-Lord and Rocket Raccoon to movie fans' attention in a hilarious and exciting way. With great stories, action and a healthy bit of improvisation, Gunn directed two of the biggest films of 2014 and 2017.

However, eight years before the Guardians, Gunn directed the absurd but brilliant comedy/horror movie, Slither. The story follows an alien invasion in a small town in the USA and the police sheriff uncovering the mystery. Alien worms infect the citizens, turning them into gruesome zombies and monsters.

The movie is hilarious yet creepy, paying homage to the bombardment of low budget horror movies in previous years. Its story is weird and bizarre but is completely enjoyable and skilfully self aware. Despite it being farfetched and ridiculous, Slither boasts some genuinely creepy and frightening scenes that appease fans of the genre.

It struggled at the box office, however, labelled as a 'flop' because of its failure to break even on its production budget. But in the years since, Slither has become a cult classic, gaining popularity from its humour, premise and excellent direction from Gunn.
