7 Upcoming Movies That Will Change How You See Iconic Characters
4. Star Wars: The Last Jedi: Luke Gets A New Ideology
Luke Skywalker is one of the most iconic movie heroes, like, ever. In the original Star Wars trilogy, he's your archetypal good guy and he lives by Jedi principals after training with Yoda.
That all works in the context of the early movies, but forget what you think you know about Luke, because The Last Jedi is about to change everything.
Compelling fan theories have claimed that Skywalker has turned dark and is actually the movie's true villain, but even if that turns out to be hogwash, the film is certain to present a different side of the character.
The film's trailers confirm Luke has decided the Jedi Order must end following a period of brooding isolation on the planet Ahch-To, and this will be a game-changer for the hero, regardless of whether it signals a shift to the Dark Side.
Let's say Skywalker has reached the conclusion that the latest threat hanging over the galaxy can only be defeated by embracing both the light and dark sides of the Force, a realisation that could pave the way for the rise of a new order of 'grey' Force users.
This means things are no longer a matter of black and white, good versus evil for him, and the audience won't be able to perceive him in such a reductionist way anymore.
Granted, there was always a spattering of darkness in the hero on his father's side, but the original trilogy saw him resist it at every turn. A more open-minded version of the character is likely to emerge, one who isn't afraid to fight fire with fire.
The other possibility is the fans are right and Luke wants to abolish the Jedi because he's gone rogue. Either way, The Last Jedi will feature a radically different Skywalker.
