7 Upcoming Movies That Will Change How You See Iconic Characters
2. Taron Egerton's Robin Hood: Forget The Legend You Know
Kingsman's ass-kicking chav Taron Egerton has been cast as Robin Hood in a movie reboot which will tell the legendary character's origin story, and that should tell you everything you need to know about how much of a departure this is going to be.
Don't expect to see any men in tights or anything remotely similar to the Kevin Costner or Russell Crowe versions. If the cast, crew and premise are anything to go off, this could challenge the world's preconceptions about Robin of Loxley.
Peaky Blinders director Otto Bathurst is helming the project and Egerton has confirmed they're shooting for the same tone as the gangster series, describing it as "Robin Hood for the 21st Century".
The star told ScreenRant...
"Ours is less Robin Hood-y. It’s grittier, it’s darker, it’s a Robin Hood for the 21st Century. If you’ve seen Peaky Blinders, you’ll know something of the tone of it as it’s the same director."
So it's fair to say this origin story is going to be a bit different to the Disney version too, and if it successfully repackages the legend for the modern age as planned, it could spark renewed interest in English folklore.
Robin Hood feels like a tired old story that everyone already knows, and the poorly received Ridley Scott film did little to inject any life into it.
By revealing that there's more to the legend than people know, the Egerton-fronted reboot could make films fans realise there's still a place for this vintage hero in a world where Marvel and DC's finest dominate the cinematic landscape.
