7 Ups And 9 Downs From San Andreas

9. The Rock Spends Too Much Of The Film Doing Nothing

When you go to see an action flick starring The Rock, what do you expect? You want to see him dropping awesome one-liners, performing over-the-top feats of strength and basically being the coolest action hero this side of Arnold Schwarzenegger, right? With its comparative "realism" to something like Furious 7, however, San Andreas leaves Dwayne Johnson in first gear for a good deal of the picture, spending a lot of the first two acts either gassing with a family member or sat in the cockpit of either a helicopter or a plane while the chaos unfolds around him. It's only in act three that Johnson really gets to do anything substantially demanding from a physical perspective, as he attempts to save his daughter while shepherding distressed locals to safety. Johnson still does his absolute best with the material he has, but the lack of one-liners and generally procedural nature of his dialogue don't do him a huge service, nor his legion of fans who were hoping for him to do a little more. The story splitting off into three different viewpoints no doubt doesn't help this, as Johnson resultantly spends a fair number of scenes off-screen.
