8 Actors Who Switched It Up Perfectly
2. Bill Murray - Lost In Translation
Bill Murray has been referred to by his friend and fellow Ghostbuster Dan Ackroyd as 'The Murrycane', owing to his whirlwind of personality that can famously lead him to a plethora of emotions in quick succession.
Throughout his career, Murray has played characters that do seem to be an awful lot like him. Swaggering rogues that have a sharp wit and eye for crap, looking at his performances in films like Stripes or Groundhog Day, they are great but vastly similar in approach.
When he undertook his role as faded film star Bob Harris in Lost In Translation, most would have expected a similar bluster. However, this wasn't the case. Murray stripped away all of his own bravado and natural comedic aggression to produce a performance of such subtlety and gentle feel, that he totally shifted his own perceived abilities in an instant.
The role won him his only Oscar-nomination to this day, for which he was arguably robbed of the win. Since then, he has gone forward with several roles that show off that same calmness and poise, though none of them have recreated the same magic that Lost In Translation had.
