While there's no history of strong video game adaptations to suggest this is anything worth getting excited about, Assassin's Creed is a bit of a different beast. Over eight proper games (and countless tie ins), Ubisoft has built up a narrative that dominates the entirety of human history, right from the Garden of Eden to the near future where it's discovered DNA contains ancestral memories (it takes some getting used to). In plain terms this means a film can tell a story that isn't restricted to the plot of the games themselves but still feels like a legitimate part of the franchise. All developments thus far have pointed towards that expansive approach; the long-linked Michael Fassbender is reportedly playing criminal Michael Lynch, who will relive the memories of his forebear, Spanish Assassin Aguilar de Agarorobo, a role similar (but not totally the same) to the series' original stalwart Desmond Miles. Also cast is Marion Cotillard, which suggests that the film may actually have promise; she's not one to jump on any old tat (although she did cameo in Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues). Who She Could Be Playing? Because there's deviation from the source there's not really any immediate options for who Cotillard is playing. She could be an Abstergo big-wig (modern day Templars, enemies of the Assassins), Assassin aide to Lynch, or a local from Spanish Inquisition-era flashbacks (which would just show the filmmakers have a very poor grasp of Europe).
