8 Actors You Didn't Know Secretly Directed Films
1. Kurt Russell - Tombstone
The best film George P. Cosmatos has his name attached to, bar none, is the western classic Tombstone. It's a solid movie through and through, just romantic enough to be a fun watch, while gritty and raw enough to not make its jaded nineties audience roll their eyes, diverging from the original events only when they have to in order to make a satisfying story, and sticking close to what matters.
And Cosmatos reportedly had VERY little input on the final product.
The film's original director and screenwriter was one Kevin Jarre, who left production right in the middle of filming. The studio then reached out to Kurt Russell to finish directing the movie. Kurt, however, knew that while he could do it, they'd need an actual director to pull things together and realize his vision, so he brought on George P. Cosmatos to essentially do what Russell told him to do. According to Doc Holiday actor, Val Kilmer, Russell "essentially directed Tombstone".
Cosmatos is the credited director of the film, but as was revealed shortly after his death in 2005, Russell was the one calling the shots from minute one, even giving Cosmatos a shot list of what he wanted Cosmatos to do each shooting day.
Whatever the methods used, if you've seen Tombstone, you know they paid off big time. And if you haven't seen Tombstone. Fix that.
