8 Alternative Awards For 2016's Movies
7. Biggest "Controversy" - Ghostbusters
It doesn’t matter if you burned with anticipation for this remake or if you grudgingly watched it on streaming. It doesn’t matter if you loved the movie, hated it or felt strangely unmoved by the experience. Come to think of it, it doesn’t even matter if you’ve never watched it.
What matters is the animosity the film generated before anyone had seen so much as a frame of footage. It’s hard to believe that in 2016 a single film could generate so much negativity, and when the first trailer was finally unveiled it famously became the most unpopular in YouTube’s history….almost as if there was a concentrated attempt to ridicule the film, in fact.
For the people who casually abused Leslie Jones on social media, it was never about the movie at all – they were trolls who believed in nothing (but wanted to destroy things like feminism and diversity) amusing themselves in the only way they knew, and when they grew bored they moved onto the next target. This could be the shape of things to come.
