8 Animated Disney Films That Really Shouldn't Be Called Classics

1. The Fox And The Hound

Every studio has a film that feels like an imitator has come in and tried to copy the patented formula. The film may not be bad, but it feels flat. Aardman has Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists, Pixar has Brave and Disney has The Fox And The Hound. Like all faux-imitations, it feels like it could be a very good film. I like the idea of a fox and hound becoming friends and struggling with their prescribed roles in society. It€™s a deviously simple way to present a very important social topic to children. The execution of it in this film, however, makes it seem like the idea isn€™t strong enough on its own (which it most certainly is). Tod (the fox) doesn€™t need to be owned by an old lady or otherwise to come into contact with Copper (the hound), and in doing so the story is given a confusingly unnecessary emotional crutch. What€™s more ridiculous is that the film, rather than letting nature take its course, throws in a solely narrative reason for Copper to turn against Tod, with the former blaming the latter for injuring his friend/mentor. Now we€™re in generic friend-cum-enemy territory, with none of the social intrigue the base concept promised. All the other Disney traits are there €“ silly sidekicks, plenty of songs €“ to just the right level (even if the music is forgettable), but that can€™t save the irritating and over thought plot. Think any of these movies actually are classics? Which Disney movie do you personally find overrated? As always the comments are the place to say it.
