8 Annoying Comic Book Movie Trends That Must Die In 2017
5. Team Up With A Kid Character!
Look, I know this worked out pretty well in both of the recent comic books movies that relied on it as a plot device (Iron Man 3 and Logan), but it's a trend that we need to nip in the bud before it's too late. Ideally, before the studios decide to go down this road any more times, let's end this trend right here in 2017.
Stories involving characters begrudgingly teaming up with kids against their will usually inspire thoughts of contempt, of course; the cinematic equivalent of an escort quest in a video game - the kind that has you ripping your hair out.
In Iron Man 3, the writers managed to make the dynamic work because Tony and his bite-sized buddy, played by Ty Simpkins, had a kind of self-awareness to their relationship. In Logan, Wolverine needed something to fight for in his darkest days, and a daughter... well, we could accept it. Also: Laura wasn't very annoying.
Thing is, the kid character thing has always been one of those trends that filmmakers have relied on when they're running out of ideas or places to go. It can work, but it's a trend that needs to disappear in wake of Logan's success with it.
