8 Awesome Things You Can Accomplish While Drunk Or High (According To The Movies)
5. Barrel-Roll A Doomed Jetliner And Land It In A Field Saving Almost Everyone On Board Flight
Flight's Whip Whitaker is a man battling with some serious personal issues. As a result he turns to drink and drugs, but none of this is exactly conducive when required to fly a jetliner full of holiday-makers the next morning. In the film's early scenes we see the plane malfunction mid-flight (entirely unrelated to Whitaker's poor physical state) and forces the protagonist into making some life-or-death decisions in order to avoid crashing and killing passengers on board. Whitaker decides that to gain more time in the air and avoid crashing into the heavily populated suburb below, he must barrel-roll the aircraft. He proceeds to spin the plane so that it's flying bottom-up (a visually thrilling moment from director Robert Zemeckis) which gives him time to reach a large open field and emergency land the plane there. Now, even in my drunkest of stupors I get the sense that somewhere deep down, a little voice would prevent me from ever thinking I would have the skill and audacity to barrel-roll a plane. This would be, I assume, because it could only ever end very, very badly. So next time anyone watches this film and thinks they could go out and do this after a couple of VK's just remember... don't.
