Joel Schumacher's Batman sequels are now considered disastrous for the movie franchise (even though they actually made some money and do - both somehow - have their fans). The problems are undeniable though and a lot of criticism tends to get thrown at the director for his casting choices.

In truth, Jim Carrey's casting as The Riddler wasn't entirely terrible, but it probably wasn't as good as it would have been had Robin Williams got the gig. In 2010 Williams told Empire that he was offered the role, but it was then taken away from him, though some accounts say he walked away over the casting of Tommy Lee Jones as Two-Face.

Regardless, if Williams could have channelled both his more flamboyant side and the restrained brilliance of his performances in Insomnia and One Hour Photo, we could have got a truly amazing villain.

Williams also apparently came quite close to playing the Joker for Tim Burton in 1989, but the reality is that his enthuasiam was used as a negotiating tool to get Jack Nicholson on board. Which is a little unfair, in hindsight.
