Spencer Tracy was Hollywood royalty of the oldest order - a genuine legend of the Golden Age who worked with the best of the best and offered some truly stunning performances of his own.

He was also the man who the show-runners initially wanted to play the Penguin for the 1966 Batman movie and TV show opposite Adam West. And judging by his performance in 1941's Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde, he would have been a hell of a get.

Unfortunately, he revealed in an interview about his last film, Guess Who's Coming To Dinner, that while he was offered a part by Batman executive producer William Dozier he had no interest:

"My reply cited what Maggie Sullavan said when she was offered an Andy Hardy family picture. She said, 'I'll do it when it is titled 'Death Comes to Andy Hardy.' I'll do a Batman when it's called 'Death Comes to Batman.'"
