5. Shakespeare In Love

The Lion King Opening
Universal Pictures

Shakespeare in Love is an interesting amalgamation of different narratives, both original and borrowed from the playwright's portfolio. Although an invented story of William Shakespeare's love life at its core, the plot also takes strong inspiration from Twelfth Night and Romeo and Juliet to tell its story.

Joseph Fiennes plays the idealistic and charming Shakespeare who is struggling to keep his creativity going before he falls in love with a woman (played by an Oscar winning Gwyneth Paltrow) and is inspired to write one of his most celebrated works.

The feel of the Elizabethan period is fully realised through a wonderous spectacle, as is Queen Elizabeth herself played by a scene stealing Judi Dench in a very brief appearance.

A strong but whimsical drama, Shakespeare in Love is a labour of affection by all involved for the playwright and that level of obsessive adoration may not be for everyone. Still, it is a well made and strongly written ode to a titan of the arts.
